Now in its twenty-second year, Suffolk Limited gives a unique insight into the performance of the Suffolk business community. Compiled by accountants, Grant Thornton and law firm, Birkett’s, the survey analyses the financial performance of the county’s leading companies and is compiled using the most recent publicly available accounts (as of 16th October 2023) of Suffolk’s private businesses.

Recognised as one of the county’s top performing, privately owned businesses during that period, AJN Steelstock, which supplies processed steel to the UK construction industry, has also been ranked fourth in the report’s ‘Top 50 Most Profitable Businesses’ as well as receiving a Top 10 listing in the ‘50 Fastest Growing Businesses’ category.

Courtney Bell, Finance Director at AJN Steelstock, comments, “We’re delighted with our continued inclusion in the Suffolk Limited report. Despite the significant challenges faced by the UK economy over the past 12 months, our position at the top of the league table validates AJN’s excellent operational and financial track record.

“Our continued success is a result of the hard work, dedication and support of everyone at AJN as well as the commitment we make to our customers, our distinctive capability and the unrivalled service we provide.”

The 2023 annual survey of Suffolk-based businesses shows the combined turnover of the County’s top 100 companies reached £6.7bn – up 15.8% compared to 2022.

The top 100 companies featured in the report generated a whopping £678.9m of profit – a rise of 12.4%. The top firms also increased their workforces by 2.1% to stand at 36,476.

Tim Taylor, Practice Leader for Grant Thornton UK LLP in East Anglia, adds: “Suffolk has a well-earned reputation as a hotbed for enterprise. That is reflected in the Suffolk Limited report, which serves as a testament to the resilience and ingenuity of the 100 most successful private companies in the county.

“These firms act as beacons to the wider business community, offering inspiration and encouragement regarding what can be achieved, even in the most challenging of circumstances.”
